Samantha Pleet in Garment District/Williamsburg

Where did you grow up?

In the woods outside of Philadelphia, PA. I lived across the street from the beginning of the beautiful Fairmount Park – it’s the longest city park in the country.

Where do you live now?

Brooklyn, New York across the street from McCarren park. Not the most beautiful park, but it’s a park at least!

When did you first come to the Catskills/Hudson Valley? Why?

I was introduced to the Catskills by dear friend Jacqueline DiMilia, who has a great old dusty haunted house near magical swimming holes not far from Phoenicia. We camped outside her house a few summers ago and I fell in love with the area.

What do you do for a living?

Fashion Designer

How did you get started?

I studied fashion design and painting at Pratt Institute and apprenticed at ThreeAsFour and Harpers Bazaar, then started my line soon after graduating. I’ve been doing this now for 8 years – goodness time flies by so fast!

What’s your favorite place in the Catskills/Hudson Valley?

It’s really hard to choose just one. For culture, I love the Dia Beacon museum. Their collection is so meditative and the space is so serene. I always find so much inspiration.

But usually when I head to the Catskills I am looking for outdoor adventure and my favorite place is on any of the beautiful trails in the Catskill mountains. One favorite is the magical Vernooy Kill falls trail – there are mythical, cascading swimming holes at the top of the trail.

What’s the last treasure you found?

The last real treasure I came across was in Peru a few years ago. I met a shaman who sold me a hand carved crystal condor staff. It has so much beautiful detail and it almost got confiscated at the airport. They thought it had too much magical/spiritual power to take on a plane.

If you were going to eat your last meal in the Catskills/Hudson Valley, where and what would you eat?

I would go to the The Blue Hill at Stone Barns. I haven’t been there yet but I just hear great things, and if it’s my last meal, why not blow all my money and try something new.

If you could have a sleepover with anyone who has ever existed, who would it be?

Honestly I would just like to invite a group of my best friends so I can just relax and have fun!

If your life was a TV show, what would be the theme song?

Scarborough Fair. I could see it being a good song for a show. It’s the one song that I can think of that I have loved my whole life.

If you could have one perfect day in the Catskills/Hudson Valley, what would you do?

Wake up at Kate’s Lazy Meadow after a slumber party with friends, have breakfast at Sweet Sue’s, go for a 3 hour hike with picnic lunch, ending by a swimming hole. Then head to Snyder’s Tavern for a beer and a spooky Twin Peaks vibe. Then I would drive down to Cold Spring for quainting and dinner on the way back to Brooklyn. Whew!
